Acupuncture involves the insertion of sterile, single-use, very thin needles through your skin at strategic points on your body. A key component of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is most commonly used to treat pain. Increasingly, it is being used for overall wellness, including stress management.

Traditional Chinese medicine explains acupuncture as a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force — known as chi or qi (chee) — believed to flow through pathways (meridians) in your body. By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians, acupuncture practitioners believe that your energy flow will re-balance.

In contrast, many Western practitioners view the acupuncture points as places to stimulate nerves, muscles and connective tissue. Some believe that this stimulation boosts your body's natural painkillers.

Acupuncture is used mainly to relieve discomfort associated with a variety of diseases and conditions, including:

Chemotherapy-induced and postoperative nausea and vomiting
Dental pain
Fibromyalgia
Headaches, including tension headaches and migraines
Labor pain
Lower back pain
Neck pain
Osteoarthritis
Menstrual cramps
Respiratory disorders, such as allergic rhinitis
Tennis elbow

“Having worked in both the fitness and healthcare industries, I’ve seen the power that exercise can have on a person’s mental health and well-being. It can change lives.

For me it was a natural step to study physiotherapy; there’s something so meaningful about helping an individual identify their goals, and partner with them to achieve them.

As a physiotherapist, I love breaking down the theory for my patients into simple principles they can understand and follow in their day-to-day lives. It’s important that people understand how their body is functioning, what is causing their challenges, and the impact movement has on their overall health and mobility.

I’m passionate about integrating education with treatment to help my patients manage their pain, improve function, and get back to their favourite activities.”

“Good health is being able to do what you want to do, when you want to do it!

As a chiropractor my aim has always been to get people active - and keep them active. And after 20 years in the industry, I know that this only happens when patients are served by a team of passionate and collaborative practitioners who understand the origin of their pain.

In 2018 I was thrilled to co-purchase Clarkson Physio with my long-term colleague and friend Ruth Wentzell. Our professional experience and core ideals aligned perfectly, and we’ve been on the same page ever since. We built a practice that was cooperative— not corporate—and a team of practitioners who would have fun together and collaborate in restoring every patient to a life they are fully participating in.

I love seeing patients walk in, relax, and know that they have come to the place where they are heard, understood, and completely supported every step of their journey back to a life of joyous—and fearless—movement.”

“Growing up, I always knew I wanted to help people, so it was a natural choice to work in the medical field and I was particularly excited to study Physiotherapy.

I always try to be patient, polite and understanding with my patients, partnering with them to achieve their unique health goals.

I am passionate about women’s health; treating Pelvic Floor Dysfunction and educating women on the importance of assessing and building pelvic floor strength.

Many women have pelvic pain or dysfunction postpartum, and they need someone who is compassionate, thorough and knowledgeable to explain what’s going on, help them understand their challenges and goals, and empower them in their recovery.

Physiotherapy treatments and rehabilitation can take time, but when a patient is committed and supported by an understanding and expert therapist, the results are life changing.”

“I was in grade six when my Grandpa had a stroke that left him paralyzed down one side of his body. The experience and ongoing pain changed his personality—he also felt a great deal of anger towards his physiotherapist. Even as a child I wondered why the person who was supposed to be helping him, was instead a source of frustration and helplessness!

That question planted a seed that would grow to become my core value as a medical professional - empathy.

After 30 years in the industry, I have never lost my passion for helping people gain back control over their pain, and getting back to the lives they love. I also believe ongoing education is the key to providing patients with the best, evidence-based care available.

Since becoming co-owner of Clarkson Physio in 2018 it has been my privilege to see each and every client given the highest level of care. When someone walks through our doors they are put at ease, listened to with empathy, given hope and then put firmly on the path back to a life of full and fearless participation.”
